The Greatness of God - God created the heavens with His words and breath.

  • Genesis 1:3 "And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light."
  • Psalm 33:6 "By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth."

Students were shown a video by Louie Giglio titled "How Great is our God". Louie Giglio says that their goal is to expand the audience’s understanding of God’s greatness and to highlight how immense and powerful God is.

The Universe Declares God’s Glory

Giglio begins by referencing Psalm 19, which declares that “the heavens tell the glory of God.” He explains the vastness of the universe, showcasing different galaxies and stars to illustrate how enormous God is. The Whirlpool Galaxy is 31 million light years away, containing 300 billion stars, just one of many galaxies in the universe, which all demonstrate the immensity of God’s creation.

Exploring Gigantic Stars

  • The Sun: Giglio compares the sun to the Earth, explaining how massive it is. He uses a golf ball analogy, stating that if Earth were the size of a golf ball, the sun would be 15 feet in diameter and could fit 960,000 Earths inside it.
  • Canis Majoris: The largest known star, Canis Majoris, could fit seven quadrillion Earths inside. He uses the analogy of filling the state of Texas with golf balls 22 inches deep to illustrate its size.

The Majesty of God’s Creation

Giglio highlights that the size and scale of the universe is humbling and demonstrates the grandeur of God. Yet, despite His vastness, God cares deeply for each of us individually.

Mr. Wellens ended with a takeaway message for the students along with a challenge.

"Even though God is bigger than you could possibly imagine, and created such huge far away stars, He is NOT far away from YOU."

Matthew 28:20 promises, "You can be sure that I will be with you always."

1 Peter 5:7 says, "Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you."

In Matthew 10:29 it says, "But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered..."

"Even though you are just one single person on this very small planet in the cosmos, you are highly valued by God. You matter to Him and He has a plan for your life. One of the greatest ways to glorify God, is to be who He created you to be." James 4:8 says, "Come near to God, and God will come near to you."

Students were asked: How will you grow in your knowledge of Him? What steps will you take to deepen your relationship with your Almighty Creator? Students were encouraged to continue their prayer life, and be in the Word daily to further deepen their relationship with Christ.

Students were given a bag with a card that summarized the chapel in addition to a golf ball to help remind them of the lesson.
