On March 19, 2025, I had the pleasure of interviewing members of the Art Club at Maranatha Christian Academy. I spoke with Mrs. Nelson, MCA’s long-standing art teacher. Over the years, she has guided many students through their artistic journeys in the classroom and through Art Club. Her favorite part about leading the club is spending time with students who share her passion for art. It’s clear she finds joy in inspiring young artists and helping them grow in their creativity.

When asked about her favorite project so far this year, Mrs. Nelson mentioned the Chinese brush painting unit, which brought unique cultural techniques into the classroom. Looking ahead, she hopes the club will have the opportunity to complete a service project, such as painting a mural or using their artistic talents to benefit the community. She also emphasized how important leadership has been in running the club smoothly. If she were to recommend the club to others, she would simply say it’s a fun and meaningful way to connect with others who love art—and she encourages students to bring a friend and dive into creative projects together!
I also had the chance to speak with one of the club members, Natanya Varghese. Natanya shared how much she enjoys learning from Mrs. Nelson and participating in the club’s many creative activities. Her favorite project so far has been painting paper mâché hats. She’s especially interested in doing more painting-based projects, as it’s a skill she hopes to develop further. One technique she’s learned this year is color blending, which has helped her grow as an artist. Natanya recommends Art Club to anyone looking for a space to express themselves and explore their creativity.

It was a pleasure getting to hear directly from those involved in Art Club. While participation is currently small, I’d like to encourage more students to join. It’s an excellent opportunity to grow artistically, connect with others, and be a part of something fun and inspiring. A big thank you to Mrs. Nelson and Natanya for taking the time to share their experiences!
