Reading is an essential part of the student experience at Maranatha Christian Academy, and our Lower School Learning Commons is designed to foster a strong foundation in literacy from an early age. Through intentional programming and engaging experiences, students are introduced to a wide variety of literature that encourages curiosity, comprehension, and a lifelong love of reading.

One popular initiative is “book tasting,” where students are invited to sample a selection of books in a café-style setting. Each student receives a “menu” where they record titles, notes, and impressions—giving them a chance to explore genres and authors they may not have discovered on their own. These experiences allow students to “taste” books and reflect on their preferences, helping them become more thoughtful and enthusiastic readers.

The Lower School Learning Commons also remains fresh and engaging thanks to a dynamic and ever-evolving collection of books. Titles are regularly updated to reflect student interests, age-appropriate content, and the best of Christian and mainstream literature. Parent involvement is encouraged, with families often suggesting titles that align with both quality and values. This collaborative approach keeps the shelves filled with exciting, relevant reads that connect with students on a meaningful level.

More than just a library, the Learning Commons is a place where reluctant readers can grow in confidence and strong readers are continually challenged. The goal is simple: create a space where every student feels inspired to read, grow, and encounter stories that reflect truth, imagination, and hope.
